My Secret Strategy for Attracting Dream Clients

A couple of years ago, when I was trying to turn Chez Núñez into a full-time gig, there was a big lull in our client work. After a year of pretty consistent branding projects, I was suddenly met with crickets in my inbox at the start of a new year. Our bank account was emptying, and I knew I needed to hustle to find a way to start bringing in new clients again.

At the same time, I was feeling a shift in my creative style and dreamed of working with types of businesses that I hadn’t before. Because I’d already shared and promoted all the examples I had of recent projects, I came up with a plan to create and share fresh designs. I then strategized how I could use them to hopefully attract dream clients at the same time.

So I developed three ‘fictitious creative briefs’ and used them like homework assignments for myself in the free time I suddenly had from a lack of client projects. I outlined the three imagined briefs as if they were coming from a dream client, and I had full reign to design them exactly as I’d like.

They took shape as a cocktail lounge, a children’s boutique, and a cafe.

I named them, worked through my routine branding process to develop their assets, and I even had some fun creating photography for each one. Then I shared them online with full disclosure about their fake-ness, and guess what? Not only did I start booking clients again, but I also began to book clients with projects that felt more and more aligned with my style and vision.

In the Chez Núñez Branding Course, I not only explain our step-by-step branding process in-depth, but I also walk you through how to use fictitious creative briefs as a helpful tool for your work as a designer - in the same way I did years ago!

The assignments in our course are all NEW - designed to inspire you. In the program, I even outline how to come up with your own unique prompts so that you can continue to use this strategy for refining your work, boosting your portfolio, and attracting clients well into the future.

After I made and shared these three brands, I designed another imagined brand called Hotel Seville later that year. The blog post I made for sharing the finished work is one of the most highly trafficked pages on my site. Hotel Seville has been re-pinned on Pinterest over 26,000 times, and to this day, it’s one of my most referenced design projects by inquiring clients. It’s also one of my personal favorite projects from the past - so I’m glad to have it out in the world connecting me with clients who love it as well.
